Hoheward - Top of the Ruhr
Welcome to the website of the Hoheward visitor centre. We are currently working on a translation of the complete site, until then you can find the most useful information about Hoheward – the landscape park, our visitor centre and the interactive permanent exhibition NEW HORIZONS – On the trail of time here. For further information please call us at the visitor centre, we will do our best to provide you with further information.
The Hoheward landscape park in the green heart of the Emscher landscape park consists of two tips - the Hoheward and the Hoppenbruch tip – and is the largest slag heap of Europe. Visitors can walk around on diversified hiking and cycling trails up to the top. Once you reach the highest platform of the Hoheward tip you can experience one of the landmark art installations of the Industrial Heritage Trail - the “Horizon Observatory”. It is made up of two great curving steel arches which can be seen from far and wide. Another highlight is the impressive horizontal sundial on the lower eastern plateau consisting of a 9 metre high obelisk telling the time with its shadow as former examples did in the roman age.
Hoheward visitor centre
The Hoheward visitor centre offers many tips for leisure activities in the Ruhr Metropolis, information about the Industrial Heritage Trail and the Emscher landscape park as well as different maps of trails in the region for cycling and hiking. A souvenir shop with a variety of books and gift articles complete the portfolio. Ultimately we organize guided tours (also in English language) around the Hoheward landscape park and the Emscher landscape park – which is the Central Park of the Ruhr Metropolis.
